Start off your Korean Drama journey!

Hi there!

In this blog I'll be mentioning the Korean dramas that one can watch to begin their 'Magical Korean drama Journey'!

Just a little background check. I had started watching k-dramas around three years back being "푸른 바다의 전설 | The Legend of the Blue Sea" my first ever k-drama. Ever since then I've been watching Korean dramas and has become the first spark to the journey of learning Korean.

The following are hand-picked dramas which I've found totally amazing from all the 65 dramas I've watched. All of them are precious for me and I've learnt a lot of them. So boiling down to the top 10 korean dramas one should watch! 


Vagabond | 배가본드


Cha Dal-gun (Lee Seung-gi) is stuntman and also the only guardian to his nephew Cha Hoon (Moon Woo-jin). Excelled in taekwondo, Cha Dal-gun sends his nephew to the Taekwondo exhibition to be held in Morocco managed by the Korean embassy.
However the flight B357 from Incheon to Morocco ends up crash due to a suspected malfunction. The Korean Embassy calls the bereaved families to Morocco to pay last visits and remorse. Lee Seung-gi happens to come across a person who is seen in the flight B357 and thus understands that the plan crash was planned. 
Chal Dal-gun sets off to find out uncover the real reason of his nephew's death with the help of Go Hae-ri (Bae Suzy), who is an NIS agent currently undercover at the Korean Embassy in Morocco.  



W - Two Worlds | 더블유



Oh Yeon-joo (Han Hyo-joo) is a second year cardio thoracic surgeon and her father Oh Seong-moo (Kim Eui-sung) is the author of a best selling webtoon entitled 'W'. The webtoon stars Kang Chul (Lee Jong-suk) an Olympic level shooter. One day Kang Chul finds his family been shot by a high range gun and he is considered the suspect. The webtoon show cases Kang Chul's life in a span of 10 years.
Oh Yeon-joo has been a regular reader of the webtoon and  big fan of Kang Chul. One day while visiting her dad's workstation, she gets pulled in the webtoon W world stumbling upon situations which  her to become the main lead of the Webtoon.  

Hi Bye, Mama! | 하이바이, 마마!



Cha Yu-ri (Kim Tae-hee) has been a wandering ghost for 5 years after a tragic accident when she was pregnant. She is only able to see everyone along including her daughter Cho Seo-woo (Seo Woo-jin). Wishing to be able to be a part of her daughter's life, Cha Yu-ri gets a chance to reincarnate as herself for 49 days and can become human if she takes her place. Her husband Cho Gang-hwa (Lee Kyu-hyung) however has remarried, having Oh Min-jung (Go Bo-gyeol) as his second wife.

 Cha Eun-ho is (Lee Jong-suk) a successful author and a senior editor at a book publishing company. Kang Dan-i (Lee Na-young) is a mother and former successful advertising copywriter. 
After a gap of 7 years in the industry and forced to look for an employment due to the divorce, Kang Dan-i finds her being lost in the world. A career gap becomes the reason for failed job interviews despite being a successful copywriter. Kang Dan-i thus applies for Temporary task support team member post which disregards age, qualification and experience. 
The company's Senior editor is Cha Eun-ho.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Ju | 역도요정 김복주


Inspired by the life of Gold Medalist, Jang Mi-ran as Kim Bok-ju (Lee Sung-kyung) along with friends Jung Nan-hee (Cho Hye-jung) and Lee Seon-ok (Lee Joo-young) are part of the weightlifting athlete group. A sport dominated by the male, the find out to be one-of-a-kind. 
Jung Joon-hyung (Nam Joo-hyuk) is a talented swimmer who is suffering from a trauma. 
A drama which showcases athletes who are living up to make it to their dreams and finding love. 

Memories of Alhambra | 알함브라 궁전의 추억


Yoon Jin-woo (Hyun Bin) is the CEO of an investment company who has currently launched a smart lense which would be used for AR (Augmented Reality) game. Jung Se-ju (Park Chan-yeol | Chanyeol) is the creator of a AR game and ask Yoon Jin-woo to travel to Grenada and meet at Hostel Bonita. 
Jung Hee-ju (Park Shin-hye) is the owner of the hostel and also the guardian of of Jung Se-ju. The disappears if Se-ju and exploring the games, Yoon Jin-woo comes across a quest to be uncovered and solve the game's glitch in order to get things back in control.


The K2 | 더 케이투


Kim Je-ha (Ji Chang-wook) is a former mercenary soldier who is framed for the murder of his lover. He hired as a bodyguard of Go An-na (Im Yoon-ah | Yoonah) thus acquiring the code-name K2. Working as an undercover bodyguard in order to avenge against the real murder for which he was framed for.

About Time | 멈추고 싶은 순간: 어바웃타임


Choi Michaela (Lee Sung-kyung) is a musical actress who has a special ability to see a person's life span as well as hers. She comes across Lee Do-ha (Lee Sang-yoon) who has an ability to stop her life-clock. The two fall in love with each other however resulting into something drastic.

Abyss | 어비스


Go Se-yon (Kim Sa-rang and later by Park Bo-young) is a 'beautiful' prosecution lawyer and Cha Min (Ahn Se-ha and later by Ahn Hyo-seop ) is an 'unattractive' successor of a cosmetic company. Cha Min being killed due to an unidentified flying object, he is revived by a crystal, Abyss, with the looks of his soul, eventually reincarnating into a handsome guy. Cha Min now is the owner of Abyss which has the power of revival. 

Reply 1997 | 응답하라 1997


Set in the 1990s, "Reply 1997" follows female high-school student Sung Shi-won (Jung Eun-ji), who idolizes boyband H.O.T and her 5 high school friends, Yoon Yoon-jae (Seo In-guk), Kang Joon-hee (Lee Ho-dong | Hoya), Mo Yoo-jung (Shin So-yul), Do Hak-chan (Eun Ji-won) and Bang Sung-jae (Lee Si-eon). As a teen, Shi-won was obsessed with a boy band. Now 33 years old, Shi-won and her friends are reviving their memories as their school reunion nears.

All the mentioned dramas are of different genres so you can pick whichever suits you!

Architecture 101

Architecture 101: Movie Review If you love the '90s setting with a mix of college days and aesthetic vibes - Architecture 101 gives it all. This movie was released in 2012 starring  Uhm Tae-Woong , Han Ga-in , Lee Je-hoon and.  Suzy .  Plot The film tells the story of two students Lee Seung-Mi and Yang Seo-Yeon who meet in an introductory architecture class and fall in love. Fifteen years later, the girl tracks down her first love to seek his help in building her dream house. The movie goes back and forth from the present Seoul (2011) to 1996 Seoul. Era 1996 shows Seung-Mi and Seo-Yeon's first meeting and how they spend the first year of college both having big dreams of their future as Architect and Radio Jockey.    Not sure on how to confess his feelings, Seung-Mi takes help of his bestfriend Nab-ddeuk ( Jo Jung-Suk ) who tells him pretty weird ways. THE Best Resource to Self Learn Korean

When you are learning a foreign language own your own, it is difficult to find the most suitable resource.  I started off my journey in 2017 wherein I had very limited resources. Mostly were paid or inaccessible and I didn't want to join a tutoring session just yet. It took time finding the best resource - usually I had more than one for a specific purpose.  However now I feel like I've found the One-Stop solution to commencing Korean learning journey for anyone! The website is  Online King Sejong Institute .  I was aware of their mobile app and it was quite useful BUT they Institute offers much more than that.  The website has periodic sessions and various courses to learn Korean at no or nominal cost and provides a Certificate when fulfilled the course criteria.  It provides content in VOD (video on demand) and real time classes along with materials and 1:1 interaction with the instructor.
